Description

Mount an Icelandic horse, and ride through the beautiful scenery of South Iceland. This tour should not be missed by those who love animals, nature, and adventure.

Your tour will begin when you are picked up from Reykjavík and driven to the farmstead of Vellir. Here, you will find your friendly experienced guides, who’ll provide you with all safety equipment and give you a briefing before showing you to the horses.

Icelandic horses are a one-of-a-kind breed, noticeably more intelligent, curious, sociable and resilient than many other types of horse worldwide. Those interested in dressage and other equestrian sports will also note that they have a unique gait, the tölt, which is renowned for giving the rider comfort while the steed maintains a decent pace over difficult terrain.

You will be paired with a horse based on your experience; this tour, after all, is open to both experienced and beginner riders. After a little warm up, you will set out into the nature of South Iceland.

You’ll start by following the picturesque river called Gljúfurá, surrounded by idyllic countryside, before taking an old, worn route towards Ingólfsfjall Mountain. This feature is named after the first man who is known to have permanently settled Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson, and is said to be his burial place.

After admiring this beautiful peak, you’ll then head to Reykjafjall mountain, and from its slopes have amazing views over the landscapes. You should be able to see down to the ocean, across mighty volcanoes, and upon the town of Hveragerði, which is constantly steaming with the geothermal activity going on just beneath the surface of the earth.

After up to three hours on horseback, your loyal steed will return you to the farm. After patting it goodbye, you can return to your vehicle and be taken back to Reykjavík.

Do not miss this opportunity to get to know both the Icelandic horse and the landscapes of the South. Check availability by choosing a date.
