Description

Get to know the natives of Iceland’s East Fjords on this cultural day tour of horse riding, maritime history, museums, farmsteads and homemade food. If you want a wholly local experience in the original fishing villages of Iceland, this adventure is the perfect add-on to your holiday.

At Egilsstaðir Airport in the morning, you will be greeted by your local guide who will be spending the day with you. You begin by driving over Iceland’s highest mountain roads and through a one-lane tunnel to reach the seaside village Neskaupsstaður in Norðfjörður Fjord, noticing the avalanche defences in the hillsides along your route.

In the centre of this small town, you’ll visit a museum on three floors, respectively dedicated to national history, maritime history and the art of local painter Tryggvi Ólafsson. After this dose of culture, you’ll be led to a local home in town to enjoy lunch in the form of traditional, Icelandic food.

Then, you’ll make your way to Skorrastaður Farm to meet and greet the Icelandic horse, a beautiful and friendly animal beloved by the locals, and go for a short ride to experience its famed fifth gait called tölt. Afterwards, you’ll be greeted at the farm to enjoy homemade refreshments.

Then, it’s time to get back in the car and head on to the fishing village of Eskifjörður. Step back in time in the seafarer’s lodge Randúlfssjóhús, unchanged since 1890 and brimming with history of yesteryear’s fisherman lifestyle. Taste fermented shark and dried fish, traditionally prepared, and wash it down with the local schnapps Brennivín if you dare.

It goes without saying that during all these wonderful activities, you will be surrounded by the majestic mountains and stunning fjord landscapes of the East. On your way back to Egilsstaðir come the evening, you might even see roaming reindeer in the fields.

Don’t miss out on this superb opportunity of having an authentic, local experience in the villages of the scenic East Fjords of Iceland.Check availability by choosing a date.
