Description

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the icy landscapes of the Falljokull glacier on this six-hour glacier-hiking and ice-climbing tour. Adventurous travelers who want an exhilarating glacier experience will love this thrilling excursion in the Skaftafell nature reserve.

Head to the meeting point in Skaftafell to meet the expert local guide leading the tour. You'll also meet the other travelers joining you on this excursion. This trip is a small-group tour, with a maximum of six participants per guide, ensuring you get a hands-on ice experience.

You'll begin with a safety briefing to ensure everyone knows what to expect on the ice. The guide will also provide essential safety gear to help you tackle the glacier, including a helmet, harness, ice axes, crampons, and ice-climbing boots. When you're ready, you'll set off.

A short drive will take you to the parking lot of the Falljokull glacier, an outlet glacier of the mighty Vatnajokull ice cap. You'll start your adventure by stepping onto the ice and enjoying an exciting glacier hike.

The experienced glacier guide will lead your group through a scenic route on the ice cap, gradually gaining about 1,200 feet (350 meters) of elevation. Along the way, you can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

There are plenty of photography opportunities during the hike, so make sure you bring your camera or a fully charged camera phone. You'll see towering ice formations, deep moulins, intricate cracks, and dramatic crevasses.

As the journey progresses, anticipation will build for the day's highlight: ice climbing. With expert guidance from your skilled instructor, you can test your limits and conquer the glacier's frozen walls or crevasses.

Feel the adrenaline rush as you secure your harness, grip your ice axe, and begin the climb.

Depending on the glacier conditions, you'll climb up an ice wall or descend into a crevasse. Don't worry if you haven't been ice climbing before, as your instructor will be on hand to ensure your safety and show you what to do.

When everyone has had a turn climbing, you'll start the hike back to the parking lot. You'll spend about five hours on the ice, covering roughly five miles (eight kilometers).

At the end of the tour, you'll return to the meeting point at Skaftafell Base Camp, ready to continue your adventures in Iceland or head home.
