Guide to Iceland is liberal

Dear friends,

Yesterday was hectic to say the least. I was wrongly accused of sexism after my article “Nightlife and mating” was criticized by a village newspaper in the north of Iceland.

Despite the factual errors and blatant misinterpretation of my writings, the story in the village paper got picked up by all the biggest news websites in Iceland.

The local journalist who wrote the story, showed grim misogyny which was in no context to the article I wrote. He even implied that girls who party and mate are "sluts". We at Guide to Iceland highly disagree with this judgement, and think that people should be free to do what they want to... as long as they never hurt anyone else!

My intention when writing the article was to celebrate the liberalism that inhabits Iceland.

In no way, shape or form does the article objectify women, or men, nor paint a picture of sex tourism in Iceland. You can read the article and judge by yourself. By reading the rest of our articles you can also notice that most of them are written in gender-neutral language.

I would therefore like to use this post to explain to you our editorial guidelines: we don´t have any.

This does not mean that anything can be written on Guide to Iceland nor does it mean that Guide to Iceland allows writings that contain discrimination, sexism, racism, hatred, bigotry or any other form of attack on individuals or social groups.

Let me explain.

There is no way for us to control the growth of Guide to Iceland, nor can we in any way set editorial guidelines to the people who run their own blogs in Contact a Local.

Since we started 1 year ago more than 80 people have contributed to make this website the largest hub of travel information about Iceland on the Internet.

People who run their own blogs in Contact a Local have to run their own editorial policy. Their pages are owned by them, as much as this blog is owned by me.

But what we can do is give you, users, the power to control what counts as good content and what not.

We are now designing and developing our website to better handle the extreme growth that it has seen in its first year.

We now receive more than 100.000 visitors each month and these numbers are growing exponentially.

As our numbers grow and our content increases we will try to do our best not to offend anyone. What happened yesterday was therefore unfortunate, but at the same time a lesson learned.

My article was never meant to offend anyone, but if it did, I sincerely apologize for it.
