Location & Nearby
Guesthouse Petursborg is located 3.1 miles (five kilometers) north of Akureyri in a beautiful spot overlooking Eyjafjordur Bay. Hlidarfjall ski area is just 7.2 miles southwest (11.6 kilometers) of the property and reachable without having to deal with Akureyi traffic. Not a skier? In summer, you can take the chair lift to the top for fantastic views of the region.
Of course, the main action is in Akureyi, Iceland's ""Capital of the North,"" which you can keep at an arm's length by staying at Petursborg but head into the city for a dose of cultural, culinary, or retail therapy when needed. In addition to the all the services one might need (supermarkets, gas stations, health centers), Akureyi offers plenty to see and do. The Akureyrarkirkja church evokes Reykavik's iconic Hallgrimskirkja church and boasts impressive panoramic views of the city from the top of its staircase. For art buffs, the Modern Art Museum showcases work by local artists. You can book whale watching tours from here as well – they depart from the Holf Cultural and Conference Centre. Akureyi is also home to the world's northernmost botanical gardens, which are located close to the swimming pool which is also worth a dip. There's great hiking on offer as well in the nearby Kjarnaskogur and Vaglaskogur woodlands.
If it's a culinary experience you're after, Akureyi delivers on that front as well. Restaurants like Strikid (locally-steeped provisions such as reindeer burgers served amid fantastic fjord views), Bryggjan (pizza), Noa Seafood Restaurant (cozy seafooder), and Akureyri Fish and Chips (name says it all) serve up memorable dining experiences.
Further afield, the Laufas turf house is 18.5 miles (30 kilometers) from Petursborg Guesthouse, while Godafoss waterfall is 34 miles (56 kilometers) away. Lake Myvatn is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the property. Petursborg guests can also book horse riding in Dalvik, which is 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the property.
Facilities & Amenities
Petursborg consists of two private wooden cottages with two single beds along with a sofa bed.
The bright rooms have either a private bathroom or shared facilities. A communal lounge area is available. During warmer months, guests can grill in the furnished garden. There is also a playground for the kiddos and washing machines and dryers for anyone in dire need of a laundry session. There is free parking in front of the house – which you'll need as the only way to arrive here is with your own set of wheels. Of course, Wi-Fi is available. Bed linens and towels are included in room rates.
Best of all, though? A geothermal outdoor hot tub! Check with your host, Andrea, a Swiss expat with over two decades in Iceland under her belt, about a session!
