Description

Combine two excellent nature tours into a single day without leaving the Reykjavík area! Take a buggy ride through the mountains just outside the city, then go whale watching in its bay. This tour is ideal for those who are staying in the capital but still don’t want to miss out on Iceland’s natural beauty.

The day will begin when you are picked up and taken to the base camp of the buggy tours, just a short drive from the centre of Reykjavík; alternatively, you can drive or bus there yourself. Once you arrive, you’ll be geared up and briefed, after which you can hop into your speedy little vehicle.

Next, you will set out on a bumpy but breathtaking trail up the nearby mountain of Úlfarsfell. The ride is exhilarating, and the views increasingly spectacular the higher up the peak you ascend. From its summit, you will stop to photograph the views, of Reykjavík, Mount Esja, Faxaflói Bay and—if the weather is clear enough—to the peninsulas of Reykjanes and Snæfellsnes.

Of course, it may be misty or cloudy, but this only adds to the gloomy, barren terrain of the mountain and the excitement of the journey.

After an hour’s buggy trip, you’ll return to base camp and be whisked back to Reykjavík. You will set out into Faxaflói Bay, and if the weather is clear, you will have a new perspective on the same beautiful natural features you saw from the mountain peaks.

The highlights of this part of the tour, however, are the animals you might see. Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and even orcas can often be seen breaking the surface of the water throughout the year, and in summer, they are sometimes joined by humpbacks. Blue, fin, sperm and pilot whales are also spotted, although rarely.

Many seabirds also live in the bay, although to see puffins amongst them, you’ll have to be there sometime during the period of May to September. Once the boat ride is complete, you’ll be dropped off back in Reykjavík, where you can enjoy the rest of your day.

Don’t miss this combination of two excellent Icelandic tours. Check availability by choosing a date.
