The Icelandic Summer

The Icelandic Summer

By the time Iceland reaches the deepest depth of winter (i.e. experiencing blistering cold winds and coated in a mixture of snow and rain), Icelanders begin to yearn for summer and the oh-so-neglectful sun. Summer "officially" begins in Iceland on the first Thursday after 18th April, although the days (even months) which follow aren't particularly summer-esque. During these months of summer, Icelanders are on the constant lookout for warmth and sunshine. When these summer days come, everybody is outside in the sun either sunbathing or just enjoying being in the sun. During this time, I enjoy walking down Skólavörðustígur as people are out enjoying the sun or making art and music.

As quick as beautiful and warm weathers arrive, storms arrive just as fast. Just the other day, it was advised that people do not travel due to a crazy storm. Here's an idea of how menacing storms in Iceland can look:

If you are planning to visit Iceland during the summer months, do prepare for both colder and warmer days. As a person constantly checking the weather forecasts, I can assure you it can be greatly unreliable, but a great source of hope for the incoming beautiful weather!

p.s. If you forgot your windbreaker or want extra warm, Cintamani and 66° North will gladly sell you some. =)

Stay warm!
