Fancy tasting some authentic Icelandic Whisky at the Eimverk Distillery?

Now, this travel-blog of mine is a bit different from my other travel-blogs at Guide to Iceland, where I focus on interesting sights to visit in Iceland and our history. But I am now going to introduce to you a genuine Icelandic product; the first and only whisky distillery in Iceland producing whisky from 100% Icelandic barley; Eimverk Distillery. They call their product Flóki whisky - From Grain to Glass. Top photo: The guide Rökkvi introducing Flóki whisky to us Eimverk distillery  Eimverk Distillery offers daily guided tours of their factory at 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 - weekends at

Drangsnes at Strandir in the Westfjords Region, the Troll and the Hot Tubs

Drangsnes is a lovely little fishing village at Strandir on the eastern part of the Westfjords Region of Iceland, just 30 km away from Hólmavík village. At Drangsnes you will find 3 hot tubs by the sea just as you enter the village. The hot tubs have become the main attraction of the village, together with Grímsey islands and the pillar of rock a little further on, which is one of the trolls, who wanted to divide the Westfjords Region from the mainland of Iceland. The pillar of rock gives the name to Drangsnes as such pillars of rocks are called drangur in Icelandic. Top photo: the hot tu

The 3 Trolls who wanted to separate the Westfjords Region from the Mainland of Iceland - Icelandic Folklore - Vestfjarðatröllin

Icelandic folklore contains a lot of elf- and troll stories and I have shown you many such locations in my travel-blog. A well-known Icelandic troll story tells us about the 3 trolls who wanted to sever the Westfjords Region from the mainland of Iceland and keep the Westfjords Region as a troll country. While staying at Kirkjuból at Strandir for 3 days I visited 2 of the trolls. I had already visited the 3rd troll on several occasions, but that troll is to be found across Steingrímsfjörður bay and gives the name to Drangsnes.  Top photo: Vestfjarðatröllin - the Westfjord Trolls The 2 tr

3 Days of fun at Kirkjuból and the Sheep Farming Museum at Strandir in the Westfjords Region

I got the opportunity to stay at Kirkjuból at Strandir in the Westfjords Region of Iceland for two years in a row, when my husband was taking part for 3 days in the children's festival Náttúrubarnahátíð at Sauðfjársetur – the Sheep Farming Museum at Strandir. All the time during this wonderful children‘s festival we stayed at the guesthouse Kirkjuból and got to know the family who lives there and runs both the festival and the Sheep Farming Museum. Wonderfully Colourful Fairytale Figures in Akureyri in North Iceland

Hidden away in a private backyard in Akureyri town, the capital city of North Iceland, I found extraordinary colourful sculptures of fairytale figures. I got permission from the folk artist Hreinn Halldórsson to show them to you here in my travel-blog on Guide to Iceland. Top photo: the Fairytale garden Pippi Longstocking I didn't know about this wonderful fairytale garden, but while we were staying at Mývatn for a couple of days back in 2019, my husband had listened to the news, where the garden was featured. So while returning home the next day he wanted to surprise me and drove in

The Extraordinary Game of Thrones Locations I have visited on my Travels in Iceland

The Game of Thrones TV-series is my favourite TV-series and I know that the same goes for many other viewers around the world. Game of Thrones has been filmed in many locations around the world, many of which are right here in my country, Iceland. I, being an Iceland travel-blogger, have visited all of the Game of Throne locations on my travels in Iceland and written travel-blogs about most of them. There are for sure some spectacular Game of Thrones locations here, which are well worth a visit. Top photo: Gjáin in Þjórsárdalur valley Gjáin - Arya and the Hound - the Water Dance Gjáin an

The spectacular Geysir Geothermal Area - Strokkur and all the other Hot Springs

I have by now written some 300 travel-blogs about different locations in Iceland, which I have visited all around my country, some in very remote areas. I dedicated my last travel-blog to the Gullfoss waterfall - the Golden waterfall, which gives a name to the most popular route in Iceland; the Golden Circle. So I find it fitting to write about Geysir geothermal area now, as these 2 very popular sights are only 10 km apart, and are always visited together. The Majestic Gullfoss - Iceland's Golden Waterfall, which gives a Name to the Golden Circle

Over the years I have been showing you many waterfalls, some well-known and easily accessible, but others remote and difficult to reach. In this travel-blog, I am going to show you the best-known waterfall in Iceland, the breathtakingly beautiful Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, which gives a name to the Golden Circle. But as you might know then the Golden Circle is the most popular sightseeing tour in Iceland. Top photo: Gullfoss with a rainbow People by Gullfoss waterfall Gullfoss is one of Iceland's landmarks and it is the waterfall I have visited most often in my country. I count

The amazing Mt. Kerlingarfjöll, a fascinating Hike through Hveradalir, and the Kjölur Route

I have visited many of Iceland's geothermal areas over the years, as there is something so otherworldly about hiking amongst boiling mud pools, hissing vents and spouting geysers. Not to mention the extraordinary geothermal colours. But there is one geothermal area in particular that blows my mind, and that is the Hveradalir geothermal area in Mt. Kerlingarfjöll in the highland of Iceland, which is one of the largest high-temperature geothermal areas in Iceland. Top photo: Hiking in Mt. Kerlingarfjöll Hiking in Mt. The Wreck of the Abandoned Plane on Sólheimasandur has become a Landmark in South-Iceland

On the vast sand plains of Sólheimasandur glacial outwash in South-Iceland, you will find an abandoned plane wreck. The plane, a Super DC-3 C 117, made an emergency landing back in 1973 on Sólheimasandur, and was left behind by the US Navy. The plane has now become one of the major tourist attractions on the South Coast of Iceland. This is not the site of a major plane crash though and there were no injuries. It was commonly believed that the plane crashed during a storm after it ran out of fuel when the pilot accidentally switched to the wrong fuel tank. Top photo: Walking on top of the
