Wonderfully Colourful Fairytale Figures in Akureyri in North Iceland
Hidden away in a private backyard in Akureyri town, the capital city of North Iceland, I found extraordinary colourful sculptures of fairytale figures. I have visited many of Iceland's geothermal areas over the years, as there is something so otherworldly about hiking amongst boiling mud pools, hissing vents and spouting geysers. Not to mention the extraordinary geothermal colours. But there is one geothermal area in particular that blows my mind, and that is the Hveradalir geothermal area in Mt. The Wreck of the Abandoned Plane on Sólheimasandur has become a Landmark in South-Iceland
On the vast sand plains of Sólheimasandur glacial outwash in South-Iceland, you will find an abandoned plane wreck. The plane, a Super DC-3 C 117, made an emergency landing back in 1973 on Sólheimasandur, and was left behind by the US Navy. The plane has now become one of the major tourist attractions on the South Coast of Iceland. This is not the site of a major plane crash though and there were no injuries. The Picturesque Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon in South-Iceland
Iceland has got some spectacular canyons, one of which is Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in South-Iceland. Fjaðrárgljúfur is a canyon with quite a unique serpent-like shape and it was not well-known to visitors to Iceland until a few years ago. A Winter Visit to the South Coast of Iceland- all the way to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon
I rarely travel in Iceland in the wintertime; I use the summers for travelling and the winters for writing. A Visit to Fnjóskadalur Valley & a Cute Petting Zoo in North-Iceland
In my last travel-blogs, I have been showing you what beautiful treasures Bárðardalur valley has to offer. Now I am going to show you the next valley west of Bárðardalur, the forested Fnjóskadalur valley. Here you will find a beautiful arched bridge, a cute Petting Zoo, and 3 churches. To visit Fnjóskadalur valley you turn on road 833. A brand-new tunnel has been built here; the 7.5 km long Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, and ring road 1 now goes through this tunnel instead of Víkurskarð mountain pass. One of my favourite Icelandic Sagas is Grettisaga - the Saga of Grettir. I read it in college and the best-known outlaw of the Viking age, Grettir sterki - Grettir the Strong, has since been my favourite character of the Icelandic Sagas. This travel-blog is a side-blog of my travel-blog about Goðafoss waterfall, which was getting to be so long that there was no room for the story of Grettir.
