Reykjadalur Valley - Bathe in a Hot River in South Iceland!
In this travel-blog I am going to show you a beautiful valley, Reykjadalur valley, in the vicinity of Hveragerði town, only some 45 km away from Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live. The name of the valley, Reykjadalur, means Steam Valley and you will understand why when the valley opens up after the hike. The valley is filled with hot springs and mud pools, and there is even a hot river in which one can bathe! Top photo: soaking in the hot river The beginning of the hike - hot pools by the trail The Reykjadalur valley is part of the Hengill area, but Mt. Hengill last eru
Skagaströnd Village and Þórdís the Prophetess in Skagi in North-Iceland
You will find a lovely village on the Skagi peninsula called Skagaströnd. I have already written travel-blogs about the pearls of the peninsula Skagi in North-West Iceland, Ketubjörg Cliffs, and Kálfshamarsvík, but want to tell you a little bit about an interesting museum in this village. Top photo: Inside the museum Þórdís the Prophetess The museum is connected to folklore, which tells the story of Þórdís the Prophetess and Mt. Spákonufell. In the 10th century, there lived a Prophetess named Þórdís by the roots of the mountain Spákonufell. Folklore in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - th
Kálfshamarsvík - extraordinary Basalt Columns at Skagi in North-Iceland
Kálfshamarsvík is a small cove by Kálfshamarsnes cape. At Kálfshamarsvík cove you will find one of the most breathtaking basalt columns here in Iceland, in my opinion. It is a pure gem of nature and hidden in the sense that it is on Skagi peninsula, which is off the beaten track, but so worth the detour. Top photo: Kálfshamarsvík and Kálfshamarvíkurviti lighthouse Kálfshamarsvík The basalt columns are so diverse here and take on so many forms that I can assure you that you will come away from this beautiful place with fantastic photos. This beautiful phenomenon, basalt columns, form
Disappearing Landscape - Ketubjörg Cliffs and Dalshorn at Skagi in North-Iceland
Ketubjörg Cliffs are off the beaten path on Skagi peninsula, which is located between Húnaflói and Skagafjörður in North-West Iceland. On this peninsula, you will find some beautiful pearls of nature, one of which is Ketubjörg Cliffs. This peninsula is for sure off the beaten track and the farmers living on the farm Víkur on the northernmost part of Skagi didn't get electricity until the 22nd of December 2016! Until then they had to use a motor-generator to get electricity. This was the only farm left without an electric cable as the next farms, which are some 10 km away from Víkur on bo
The Annual Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður Town in Iceland
Hafnarfjörður town, the neighbouring town of Reykjavík where I live, hosts the annual Viking Festival, which is the oldest and biggest festival of its kind in Iceland. Visiting this festival will make you feel like you have been transferred back in time a thousand years or so. The festival, which has been held since 1995, takes place on the second weekend of June and lasts for 4 days! For me, this is the most fun time to be in Hafnarfjörður. Gudrun the Seeress from Denmark and Guðmann the Shaman from Iceland have a booth at the Viking Festival I have photos from many Viking Festivals, b
The Viking Village in the Viking Town Hafnarfjörður in SW-Iceland
Hafnarfjörður is a lovely town in the vicinity of Iceland's capital city, Reykjavík, where I live. It is sometimes called the Town in the Lava, as it is built on a lava field. When you walk through this town you will see big lava rocks in some of the backyards. Hafnarfjörður has also been called the Town of the Elves, as it is a well-known fact that the Icelandic elves (hidden people) live in lava rocks. But in this travel-blog, I am calling it the Viking town :) Top photo: Fjörukráin at the Viking village in Hafnarfjörður Hotel Viking at the Viking village I have written several tr
Þakgil and Remundargil Canyons - 2 magical Hidden Gems in South-Iceland
Þakgil and Remundargil canyons are two hidden gems in South-Iceland. They are located in a less visited area close to the very busy Vík and Reynisfjara black beach on Iceland's south coast. The road to these beautiful canyons will take you through such amazing terrain. The drive up to Þakgil canyon is some 15 km and it takes 30 minutes to drive all the way to the canyon without stopping. I, on the other hand, am always looking for interesting things to write about, so I made several stops on the way. Amongst the stops I made was a stop at Stórhellir cave, which is a relatively large cave by
Iceland Has Got a sparkling Ice Diamond Beach on Breiðamerkursandur
The most popular tour in Iceland is the Golden Circle tour, but did you know that Iceland has got a beach with glistening ice chunks, which sparkle like diamonds? I try to go there every year to check out the "latest" versions of the ice diamonds glistening on the black beach, Breiðamerkursandur. Visiting this beautiful beach is one of my favourite things to do here in Iceland! Now, the first photo is Iurie's photo, he is, of course, a genius with the camera and directs photo tours in Iceland. You can see my amateur photos below ;) But the ice diamonds on the beach are so breathtaking that
Landmannalaugar - a Geothermal Tour with breathtaking Rhyolite Mountains
Landmannalaugar is one of the hidden pearls of Iceland, a truly magical place in the highlands of Iceland. I have visited Landmannalaugar several times on a guided tour. My following account is of one of my visits to Landmannalaugar: Top photo: Hiking in Landmannalaugar Hjálparfoss waterfall Hjálparfoss waterfall Our first stop was at Árborg in Árnes, where there is a gas station and café up-country in South-Iceland, where we bought food to eat in Landmannalaugar. Then we drove further on into Þjórsárdalur valley and stopped by the beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss, Help's Falls. Hjálpa
The Historic Reykholt in West-Iceland & Snorri Sturluson - the most influential Icelander
In this travel-blog I want to tell you about Reykholt in West Iceland, which is one of the most historical sites in Iceland. Reykholt was the home of Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241) from 1206-1241. Snorri was quite possibly the most influential Icelander ever. He was a Saga writer, politician, historiographer, and poet. Top photo: the 2 Reykholtskirkjur churches at Reykholt Snorri Sturluson as depicted at the Saga Museum in Reykjavík He was a chieftain and one of the richest men in Iceland during the Sturlungaöld - the Sturlung Age and the most powerful man in Iceland.
