Nonnahús and Nonni - the Honorary Citizen of Akureyri the Capital City of North-Iceland
Nonnahús museum is my favourite museum in Akureyri and a hidden gem in the capital city of North Iceland. Eyjafjörður Fjord - the Christmas House - Jólahúsið - is open all Year round
Just outside of Akureyri town in North-Iceland, you will find a Christmas House - Jólahúsið - in Hrafnagil in Eyjafjörður fjord. It is a must-visit while in this area. It is ever so lovely, like a magical world. And it is very much loved by the locals, I included :) The last time I visited it was in August and the temperature was 20 degrees C so it was quite strange entering a Christmas House. Eyjafjörður Fjord - Akureyri, the beautiful Capital City of North-Iceland
Akureyri is the capital city of North Iceland and situated in Eyjafjörður fjord, so I think it is fitting to add a special travel-blog in my Eyjafjörður series about this magical city of the North. It has got a population of approximately 19,156 people (2020) making it the second-largest city in Iceland after the Greater Reykjavík area. This travel-blog is the 5th part of my 8 part series of travel-blogs about Eyjafjörður fjord in North Iceland. I made a detour from Eyjafjörður fjord into Hörgárdalur and Öxnadalur valleys to show you where the ghost story took place. The Deacon of Dark River - Djákninn á Myrká - a Ghost Story from North-Iceland
Well-known Icelandic folklore tells us about the Deacon of Dark river - Djákninn á Myrká. It is a ghost story and I have always found this one to be particularly scary. Just while writing about it I get chills down my spine. This ghost story took place in Hörgárdalur valley in North-Iceland. Hörgárdalur is a valley leading to Eyjafjörður fjord, Iceland's longest fjord. So I found it fitting to add it to my series of travel-blogs on the beautiful Eyjafjörður fjord. Eyjafjörður Fjord in North-Iceland - Part III - the Historic Gásir and the Vikings
Gásir is a very special place in Eyjafjörður fjord. It is hard to believe it now, but Gásir was the main trading post in Northern Iceland in the Middle Ages. It remained a trading place for 4 centuries from the 11th century until the 15th century. During the summertime, a village (a camp) formed while the ships were arriving and leaving. Gásir is quite unique as it is the only place where so many antiquities from a trading post from the Middle Ages can be found. In this travel blog, I am going to tell you about Dalvík, which is a town in Eyjafjörður fjord in North Iceland with some 1,435 inhabitants (2023), located midway between Akureyri and Siglufjörður. The main industries here are fish processing, fisheries, industry, and trade. In Dalvík a very popular annual family festival called Fiskidagurinn mikli or the Great Fish Day is held every year. Eyjafjörður Fjord in North-Iceland - part I - Hrísey Island - the Pearl of Eyjafjörður
Eyjafjörður fjord is a beautiful fjord in North Iceland. It is about 60 km long from the mouth to the bottom of the fjord, which makes it the longest fjord in North Iceland. In this lovely fjord, you will find so many interesting places to visit, that I have dedicated 7 travel-blogs to all the interesting things to see and do in Eyjafjörður. Eyjafjörður is at the edge of the Arctic Circle and there are 2 beautiful islands here; Hrísey island and Grímsey island, but through the latter of the two, the Arctic Circle runs. The beautiful Waterfall Foss á Síðu and the Dwarfs in Dverghamrar Cliffs in South-Iceland
Foss á Síðu or Foss at Síða - "foss" meaning waterfall - is a beautiful waterfall by ring-road 1, only some 10 kilometres east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in South-Iceland. The waterfall, which cascades down from a lake called Þórutjörn, is not large like so many other waterfalls here in Iceland, but there is something special about it and the rock formations surrounding it. The Historic Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Systrafoss & Systrastapi in South-Iceland
In this travel-blog I want to show you Kirkjubæjarklaustur - a village in South-Iceland by ring-road 1, the first village you encounter after driving through the vast glacial outwash of Mýrdalssandur. It is a lovely little village rich in history. The name of the village, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, is this long as it is actually 3 words linked together - kirkju = church, bæjar = the genitive of a farm or a village, and klaustur = convent.
