Ármann in Mt. Ármannsfell and the Troll Games on Hofmannaflöt Plains in South Iceland

In this travel blog, I want to introduce you to the half-troll Ármann in Mt. Ármannsfell in South Iceland. Ármann was related to Bárður Snæfellsás, the protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, about whom I have written another travel blog. Ármann is much less known than Bárður Snæfellsás, though, and that is why I want to tell you a little about him and the games on Hofmannaflöt plains by Þingvellir national park. Ármann is said to have been the protector of Alþingi, which was established in 930 at Þingvellir. Top photo: Hofmannaflöt plains and Mt. Meyjarsæti Bárður Snæfellsás Ármann's

Kerið crater and Nykurinn - the Water-kelpie in South Iceland

Kerið in Grímsnes is a quite impressive, oval-shaped volcanic crater filled with a lake, formed during a volcanic eruption some 6,500 years ago. Folklore is connected to the lake in the crater, which tells of a water kelpie living there. In this travel blog, I am going to tell you a little bit about the craters, the water kelpie, and the settlers of this area in South Iceland. Top photo: looking into the crater Kerið crater Kerið crater is the northern end of a row of craters called the Tjarnarhólar craters, which are russet to bright red in colour. The Golden Circle in Iceland looks quite magical in the Wintertime

I have written many travel blogs about the Golden Circle, the most popular day tour in Iceland, visited by the majority of our foreign guests. I revisited the Golden Circle on a freezing winter day when the days are very short and the temperatures are very low. On this particular day, the temperatures dropped to -18 degrees C. Top photo: Strokkur spouting The massive Gullfoss waterfall was almost frozen solid Fortunately, the weather was still and sunny for most of the day, as I showed you in my last travel blog about the second stop on our visit, the Secret Lagoon by Flúðir. The tour I

A magical Winter Visit to the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir in South Iceland

Iceland can be magical in the wintertime when the low angle of the winter sun lights up the surroundings. On a freezing winter day in the darkest month of the year, I visited Gamla laugin - the Secret Lagoon in South Iceland. The temperatures were low -14 degrees C, and it became even colder later in the day at -18 degrees C, but it was still, clear skies and beautiful white snow covered the whole of Iceland. Grettir the Strong and Grettisbæli Lair in Hítardalur Valley in West Iceland

In my last travel blog, I told you about Hítardalur valley in West Iceland and the giantess Hít who invited the trolls of Iceland to an eventful Christmas party.  In this travel blog, I want to tell you about Grettir the Strong Ásmundarson, whom we read about in the Saga of Grettir and his 3-year stay in the triangular-shaped Grettisbæli in Mt. Fagraskógarfjall in Hítardalur valley. Top photo: Mt. Fagraskógarfjall and Grettisbæli Mt. The Giantess Hít in Hítardalur Valley and the Party of the Trolls - Folklore from West Iceland

As I have shown you in many of my travel blogs through the years, Icelandic folklore is filled with stories about trolls, elves, and other mythical beings. In this travel blog, I want to tell you about the big troll party in the Hítardalur valley in West Iceland, hosted by the giantess Hít, and attended by many of the well-known trolls in Iceland. Top photo: Trolls in Hítardalur valley Bárður Snæfellsás is the protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula The story is told in one of the later Icelandic Sagas, Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss, dating back to 1280-1390. The gentle Troll Bergþór in Mt. Bláfell - Icelandic Folklore from South Iceland

Icelandic folklore is filled with stories about trolls, ghosts, and the hidden people of Iceland. One such story tells us about the gentle troll Bergþór at Bláfell. It took place in the Haukadalur valley, very close to one of Iceland's most popular tourist attractions, the Geysir geothermal area. Opening photo: a statue of Bergþór at Bláfell by Geysir  Strokkur erupting at the Geysir geothermal area If you have visited the Geysir geothermal area, then you might have noticed a wooden statue of a troll. It used to be in a prominent location with a large bench next to the troll, but it has

Iceland is dotted with lovely little country churches, and there are approximately 380 churches in Iceland, big and small. Some of them belong to the farmer, and some are in the possession and care of Þjóðminjasafnið - the National Museum of Iceland. Top photo: Tungufellskirkja church Inside Tungufellskirkja church In this travel blog, I am going to show you one of the smallest churches in Iceland, Tungufellskirkja church upcountry in South Iceland, which is in the possession of Þjóðminjasafnið - the National Museum of Iceland. Barbörukapella - the Chapel of St. Barbara in Kapelluhraun in SW-Iceland

In my last travel blog, I showed you several churches in Iceland and told you about the folklore and stories associated with them, such as the votive Strandarkirkja church. But did you know about the chapel in the Kapelluhraun lava field in the Great-Reykjavík area? It is called  Barbörukapella - the Chapel of St. Barbara, and we have no idea how old it is. Top photo: Standing by the entrance to Barbörukapella chapel Barbörukapella chapel is opposite the road from an aluminum smelter - old meets new The reconstruction of the old chapel is located on the top of a lava mound, opposite t
