Description

Get to know the cold heart of the country on this glacier hike and ice climbing tour. Iceland is known for beautiful nature, stunning landscape and lots of glaciers, that make Iceland the perfect country to try out ice climbing and glacier hiking. Ice climbing/hiking is a fun way to explore the glacier. Our guides will teach you essential skills for climbing /hiking and how to use crampons and ice axes on the glacier.

When we arrive at the glaciers, we'll give you the right glacier gear for the climb and hike. All of our guides are locals and have years of experience, so they will be able to assist you well in gearing up and explaining your environment. We have a low client to guide ratio to ensure everything runs smoothly, and to create a more personal atmosphere for all our visitors. First, we have a short hike to the base of the glacier. When we arrive, we'll put on the climbing gear and walk up onto the ice cap.

Because the glacier is always changing, we need to look for the right places for climbing. We always try to climb from 2 to 3 different locations on the glacier to give you a different experience and a variance in the level of climbing. We recommend having some snack and lunch with you.

We will be climbing on Sólheimajökull glacier tongue, but it is an outlet of the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Mýrdalsjökull glacier is the fourth largest glacier in Iceland 590 km², underneath it is the volcano Katla. Katla has erupted about 20 times in historical times, it last erupted in 1918, that lasted for 23 days. Sólheimajökull itself stretches about 8 to 11 km down from Mýrdalsjökull and ranges from one to two kilometres in width. There are still marks on Sólheimajökull after a powerful eruption from Katla in the year of 1918.

You don't have to be a professional climber, this is suitable for most people in good health. Hiking on Sólheimajökull is easy, this is perfect glacier to try out glacier equipment. After the trip, we offer some Icelandic snacks, dry fish, shark and some drinks.
