Hertz Iceland - Campers & Motorhomes

Hertz Iceland has rented cars in Iceland since 1971 and is run locally by Bílaleiga Flugleiða ehf. Arriving travellers pick up at a Hertz desk inside the arrivals hall at Keflavík Airport, and there are 10 more locations, including downtown Reykjavík, Reykjavík's domestic airport, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Ísafjörður.

The fleet runs from small economy cars and automatics to highland-ready 4x4s like the Land Cruiser and Defender, plus Hilux campers, motorhomes, EVs and minibuses. Hertz says its cars average under two years old, basic insurance comes with every rental, and winter cars are fitted with studded or winter tyres.

Because Hertz has so many regional offices, one-way trips around the country are easy to arrange.

We rented a 4x4 from Hertz for our trip. Booking and paying online in advance was straightforward and convenient. Upon arrival, we took a number at an automatic queuing machine and waited for our turn. Once called, the counter process itself was quick and efficient, and we opted for full insurance coverage for added peace of mind throughout the trip. The pickup counter was conveniently located just to the left of the arrivals door. For the return, we had to head to a separate return location, which we found easily by searching "Hertz Return Station" on Google Maps. Our rental car came with a full tank of gas, with the expectation of returning it full as well — a simple, fair policy. The vehicle itself was in excellent condition, which mattered a great deal given we needed a dependable car for our Iceland road trip. Our journey went smoothly, and a well-maintained car played a real part in that success. Thank you, Hertz — we'll gladly choose you again for future travels anywhere in the world. A useful tip for anyone renting a car: take 10 minutes before driving off to adjust your seat and familiarize yourself with the vehicle's basic controls — gear shift, gas tank release, wipers, headlights, and so on. These features are often positioned differently from car to car, and taking a few minutes to locate them beforehand makes for a much more confident and comfortable start to your drive. We also downloaded both the Parka and EasyPark apps ahead of time for parking in Iceland, which turned out to be the right call. Having them ready made things much easier whenever we needed to park in a pay lot. We did fill up our gas tank when leaving Rekjavik. There were many gas stations in downtown which was more convenient than filling up the gas tank near Keflavik airport.
