The beautiful Fljótshlíð in South-Iceland - Gluggafoss and Gunnar at Hlíðarendi
I want to show you a beautiful area in South-Iceland called Fljótshlíð. It is a Viking area and the scene of the Saga of Njáll, which is sometimes referred to as the Queen of the Icelandic Sagas. You will maybe notice a sign as you enter Fljótshlíð, on which is written "Á Njáluslóðum" - meaning that you are now entering the region of the Saga of Njáll. The Saga of Njáll is one of the best known of the Sagas. It took place around the millennium of 1000 in the Rangárþing region. It tells the story of the friends, Gunnar at Hlíðarendi and Njáll of Bergþórshvoll. Top photo: the information s
The Colourful Vatnshellir Lava Cave on Snæfellsnes in West-Iceland & its Beautiful Lava Formations
I have written many a travel-blog about the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula in West-Iceland with its myriad of beautiful sights. Now I can add one more magical place to visit on the peninsula - the extraordinary subterranean lava world in Vatnshellir cave. I had been meaning to visit this cave for years as I had seen that it was easily accessible with guidance. But it wasn't until the summer of 2016 that I finally climbed down the winding staircase into this beautiful cave. The beautiful Silver Circle of Iceland in a modified Super Jeep
The most popular tour in Iceland is the Golden Circle tour - but did you know that we have another tour called the Silver Circle tour? I joined this tour with Activity Iceland in a huge modified super jeep - the most luxurious super jeep in which I have ever been driven. Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Sean Penn, and Dennis Quaid have all been driven around in this super jeep while they were filming in Iceland. They had been sitting precisely in my seat on this tour. This super Jeep is a modified Ford 350 EXXL Excursion extra long with 46 inches tires. I felt pampered in this awesome jeep, in m
Hotel Laki at Efri-Vík and its Amazing Surroundings in South-Iceland
I stayed at the beautiful Hotel Laki at Efri-Vík recently, when I went to explore an area of Iceland called Landbrot. I had heard about interesting sights in this area in a TV-program back in 2013 and I so wanted to explore this part of South-Iceland. To reach this area and Hotel Laki one has to get off ring-road 1 just before entering Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, which is a popular stop in beautiful surroundings. After driving for 5 km this big hotel appeared. This was my first time in this area and I was amazed to see such a big and modern hotel here. Hotel Laki Efri-Vík farm Hotel
The Beautiful Elf City and Elf Church by Hotel Laki in South-Iceland
I recently went to explore an area of South Iceland called Landbrot. I had watched a program on TV about this area and learned about the 11th-century wall, an Elf City and an Elf Church, a bunker where you could see ash layers from centuries ago, and many more interesting things. Top photo: The elf city The Elf City at Efri-Vík Those of you who read my travel-blog know that I search for elf spots and elf stories all around Iceland - so visiting the land of Efri-Vík, on which the family-run Hotel Laki is located, was an unexpected treat for me. We stayed at the hotel for one night. We h
The Mysterious Snæfellsnes National Park Day Tour - West-Iceland
Snæfellsnes peninsula is one of my favourite locations here in Iceland, it is absolutely magical with so many interesting, beautiful sights. You will see stretches of lava fields, amazing gorges, and waterfalls, lovely hamlets, basalt columns in abundance, mineral springs, and volcanoes - just to name a few of the amazing sights on the Snæfellsnes peninsula! I have written a 5-part series of travel-blogs on Snæfellsnes peninsula, but as many people have been asking me about guided tours to this area I decided on checking out a guided tour. I chose the Mysterious Snæfellsnes National Park Da
The Museum of Icelandic Witchcraft and Sorcery at Hólmavík in the Westfjords Region of Iceland
A very popular museum is to be found in Hólmavík village, on the east side of the Westfjords Region of Iceland, which is a must-visit while in this area. This museum is called the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft or "Galdrasafnið" in Icelandic. The museum is on two floors and depicts the history of sorcery, which was seemingly powerful in this area of Iceland called Strandir. Top photo: A creepy guy at the Sorcery museum Angurgapi magical stave The museum is not for the faint-hearted and even though I have visited this museum several times I still get the chills being in there - surro
Hólmavík in the Westfjords Region of Iceland - the Sorcery Town!
Hólmavík is a lovely town on the east coast of the Westfjords Region of Iceland and the largest town in an area called Strandir. In this area, Strandir, at Trékyllisvík, 3 men were burnt at the stake for sorcery in 1654. A witch-craze followed and this period of time in Iceland, from 1654-1690 has been called "Brennuöldin" or the Fire century. Another 16 men and 1 woman were burnt at the stake, the last one in 1690. You can learn all about this at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft in Hólmavík. Top photo: Hólmavík village The Huge Sea Turtle A huge sea turtle in Hólmavík
Skógasafn - Skógar Museum - An Excellent Regional Museum and Turf House in South-Iceland
Visiting folk museums is something I love doing on my travels in my country. You will find an excellent district museum in South-Iceland, a 2 hours drive from Reykjavík, which I recommend visiting - Skógar Museum (Skógasafn in Icelandic). At the museum, you will see a turf house, but as those of you, who have read my travel-blogs know - then I love turf houses and seek them out on my travels in Iceland. Top photo: the turf house at Skógasafn museum At Skógar museum I have written many travel-blogs about the few turf houses left in Iceland as I want to introduce to you this old architec
The spectacular Skógafoss Waterfall in South-Iceland and the Legend of the Treasure Chest
Skógafoss waterfall has been my all-time favourite waterfall in Iceland since I first visited it as a child with my parents. Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. You can walk right up to it but be prepared to be drenched. It is overwhelming standing next to it. Top photo: a rainbow at Skógafoss Seeing that the waterfall produces a lot of drizzle you will be able to see beautiful rainbows on sunny days. The most beautiful rainbows I have ever seen I have seen here by Skógafoss. Often there are beautiful doubl
