A lovely Stay in a Hotel right next to Skógafoss waterfall in South-Iceland!

The mystical Skógafoss waterfall in South Iceland has been my favourite waterfall ever since I first visited it with my parents when I was a small girl. I never get enough of this majestic waterfall and can stay by it for hours. So as a treat for my birthday, I decided to stay at Hotel Skógar, which is almost next to the waterfall, so that I could enjoy my birthday by Skógafoss. Top photo: Skógafoss waterfall Hotel Skógar - our room I booked a standard room at Hotel Skógar, which is a small and cosy hotel with 12 en-suite rooms. Hotel Skógar is only a 5-minute's walk away from Skógafo

Mt. Pétursey in South Iceland and the Elves - Icelandic Folklore

A 275-meter high tuff mountain in South Iceland stands tall by ring-road 1. It is called Pétursey or Peter's Island. There are a couple of such mountains, which used to be islands, on the south coast.  Most people pass these mountains at 90 km/h on their travels in my country, which is a shame, so I am going to tell you about the elves and supernatural beings living in them - and other interesting facts and accounts about these mountains. Top photo: Pétursey in the distance Pétursey island Pétursey was called Eyjan há or Tall Island in the olden days. Seeing that it is called an island

Skessugarður - the Rampart of the two Giantesses in East-Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

In this travel-blog I am going to show you Skessugarður - the Rampart of the Giantess. It is a natural phenomenon in East Iceland, which has been called one of the most amazing natural formations in Iceland. It consists of massive boulders (porphyritic basalt) making up a 300-meter long and 5-meter high natural wall.  Top photo: At Skessugarður Skessugarður - the Rampart of the two Giantesses  Skessugarður is a geological phenomenon as it was formed by an ice-age glacier, Brúarjökull glacier. This was then followed by a flood, which washed this area clean of smaller rocks leaving behi

The Njarðvík Haunting - Innra-Hvannagil Gorge - a Ghost-Story from East-Iceland

In Njarðvík in the Eastfjords of Iceland, close to Borgarfjörður-Eystri, you will find an amazing gorge called Innra-Hvannagil gorge. This beautiful gorge is a golden rhyolite art of nature - tall screes filled with the most beautiful rhyolite rocks. Innra-Hvannagil gorge is very easily accessible. It is close to the main road and you will find a parking lot close to the mouth of the gorge. After just a short hike you will find yourself surrounded by the most amazing yellow - goldish rhyolite.   Innra-Hvannagil gorge  I was lucky that the sun came out and lit up the gorge, making it eve

Lindarbakki Turf House in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East-Iceland

A cute little red-painted turf house catches one's eye in Bakkagerði village in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East-Iceland. As you might know from my previous travel-blogs then I have written about almost all of the remaining turf houses and turf churches in Iceland.  These turf houses are of great interest to me and I seek these old houses out on my travels in Iceland. Lindarbakki Turf House in Borgarfjörður-Eystri  The turf houses are our architectural heritage, but unfortunately, there are only a few of them left, most of which belong to Þjóðminjasafn Íslands - the National Museum of Icela

Njarðvíkurskriður Screes and the Monster Naddi in East-Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

A big wooden cross stands tall by the road leading from Njarðvík to Bakkagerði in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East-Iceland.  A gravel road leads way up in the mountain and by a curve in the road you will find the big cross. A road passable for cars was opened here in 1950, but before that time people could only travel between these two places on foot or riding on horseback It was a dangerous route mainly because of falling rocks, mudslide and avalanches. But not only because of the landslide... Top photo: the wooden cross - the photos were taken on a foggy and rainy day on a small camera, heng

The strangely looking Sound Sculpture Tvísöngur in Seyðisfjörður in East-Iceland

In my last travel-blog, I told you about the strangely shaped Dvergasteinn Dwarf Rock by Seyðisfjörður town. You will find another strangely shaped concrete structure on the other side of the fjord. This concrete structure is located on the mountainside above Seyðisfjörður town. It looks like 5 different-sized interconnected mushrooms - with door openings - or a cluster of igloos! It looks kind of surreal (in a good way) located up in the mountainside. Top photo: Tvísöngur Visiting Tvísöngur back in 2014 This structure is a sound sculpture by the German artist Lukas Kühne - called "Tví

Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarfs - by Seyðisfjörður in East-Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

On my travels in Iceland, I always seek out places connected to folklore. There is a myriad of such stories in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Collection of Folklore by Jón Árnason, which is one of my favourite read, all 5 volumes of it! While I was travelling in East-Iceland  I visited several such places, one of them being Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarfs - which is folklore related to a very peculiar rock in Vestdalseyri just outside of Seyðisfjörður town. Top photo: in front of Dvergasteinn rock Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarfs The rock has got several big holes in it, ero

A Sapphire blue Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajökull Glacier in South-Iceland

Visiting the blue ice cave in the Vatnajökull glacier is something I will never forget, it left me totally speechless! I was on a tour with the Guide to Iceland team with the purpose of checking out the ice caves in this area. We had already visited the beautiful aquamarine ice caves in Fláajökull glacier earlier that same day.  After visiting the ice cave in Fláajökull glacier, I was very excited about visiting another ice cave, as these rare natural ice caves are out of this world. The ice cave guides go look for ice caves every winter and we are always eager to see what the newly formed

Amazing aquamarine Ice Caves in Fláajökull in Vatnajökull glacier in Southeast-Iceland

Visiting an ice cave in Vatnajökull glacier is a fantastic experience. I had seen some beautiful photos from inside the ice caves and very much wanted to see the caves for myself. I got the chance to visit them in January when the staff at Guide to Iceland went on a 2-day-trip to visit two beautiful ice caves. So off we went to southeast Iceland to experience the ice caves. We spent the night at Hotel Smyrlabjörg, which is a lovely country hotel in the Vatnajökull region.
