Icelandic Crafts and Design at City Hall in Reykjavík

Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, twice a year hosts the Crafts and Design Fair at City Hall called Handverk og hönnun in Icelandic. Icelandic artists from all over the country come together at City Hall to sell their unique products.  Here you will meet designers from the North, South, East and West parts of my country. At the sales show you will find woollen and leather goods, jewellery, clothes and shoes, artwork made from horns and bones and paper, wood-carving and pottery.  Top photo: Reykjavík City Hall It is a great venue for getting acquainted with what the designers and a

Stand-up Comedy in Iceland - the Comedy Club & the Golden Gang - Come Talk Funny - a Show in English

My hometown Reykjavík has got an ever-growing Stand-up comedy scene, which I attend regularly - as what is better than a good laugh to get us through the long winters here in Iceland?  Or just any time of the year :) And now there is even a Stand-up comedy show in English for our foreign visitors. I want to tell you about how it all started and developed into the ever so popular shows of the Golden Gang Comedy - Come Talk Funny, which in May 2017 celebrated their 100th show in just 2 years! Rökkvi Vésteinsson, Programmer and Stand-up Comedian created the Comedy Club back in 2013 and star

The Secret Cabin of Thor hidden in the Woods of South-Iceland

Tucked away in the woods of South-Iceland you will find the Secret Cabin of Thor -named after both the Old Norse Viking God of Thunder and the owner of the cottage, Ólafur Thor. Close by Thor's cabin the ice-cold and roaring glacier river Hvítá runs its course from the second largest icecap in Iceland, Langjökull glacier and Lake Hvítárvant in the highland of Iceland.  Top photo: the Secret Cabin of Thor in the woods Hvítá river This white and forceful glacial river is the same river that creates Iceland's best-known waterfall, Gullfoss - the Golden Fall, which cascades 32 meters in tw

A Hike to the perfectly shaped Eldborg Scoria Crater on Snæfellsnes in West-Iceland

Eldborg crater in Hnappadalur stands like a guard on the boundaries of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Mýrar in West Iceland. Eldborg crater, which means Fortress of Fire, is one of the most perfectly shaped craters I have ever seen here in Iceland. This beautiful scoria crater is believed to have been at its most active some 5,000-8,000 years ago.  Top photo: Eldborg Hiking to Eldborg It is easy to hike to the crater and have a peek inside it. The hike to Eldborg back and forth is some 6 km and it takes around 1.5 hours to hike both ways, depending on how fast you walk. We walked very

Kerlingarskarð Pass in Snæfellsnes in West-Iceland - the Folklore of the Giantess & her Fiancé

Kerlingaskarð pass is a rugged mountain pass on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West-Iceland. This mountain pass lies 310 m above sea level and used to take people from Helgafellssveit on the northern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula to Miklaholtshreppur on the southern part.   In this pass lives a giantess! Top photo: Kerling in Kerlingarskarð pass Lóndrangar cliffs Kerlingarskarð pass is no longer maintained and the road is in pretty bad condition. It is now closed off to traffic and the paved Vatnaleið has taken its place since 2001. We drove just a short distance up the pass to get

Hofsstaðir in Garðabær Town - a Viking Settlement Age Farm in South-West Iceland

In this travel-blog I am going to tell you about a Settlement Age farm that was discovered in 1986 in Garðabær town, which is a part of the Great-Reykjavík area.  It is a big Viking Age longhouse dating back to 870-930, 8x30 meters on the outside with a floor surface of 170 sq.m, which is quite a large longhouse. Top photo: Hofsstaðir Viking longhouse and Vídalínskirkja church Hofsstaðir Viking longhouse We don't know who lived here, but it looks like a longhouse of a wealthy farmer.  It is believed that 20-30 people lived on the farm and it was most likely inhabited until the 12th cen

Skriðuklaustur and the Archaeological Excavations in East Iceland

Skriðuklaustur is a beautiful place to visit on your travels in East Iceland. It is a Centre of History and Culture (Gunnarsstofnun) and one of the greatest historic sites in Iceland. The last Catholic monastery in Iceland, an Augustinian monastery, operated on this spot from 1493-1552. Its main purpose for these 60 years was to attend to the sick.  This beautiful building is the former home of the noted author Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975). The Holy Mt. Helgafell on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula & the 3 Wishes

The historical Mt. Helgafell - the Sacred Hill - on the Snæfellsnes peninsula is in the eyes of many of us Icelanders a sacred place. It is believed that if you hike to the top of the mountain without looking back or uttering a word you will get 3 wishes fulfilled. This only works the first time you hike the mountain though, so most Icelanders have already done this hike and got their wishes. Mt. Helgafell is 73 meters tall and it takes about 10 minutes to hike to the top. From there you will be rewarded with a great view of the Breiðafjörður bay and the surrounding areas. Top photo: Mt. H

Mt. Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss in Grundarfjörður - the most photographed Mountain in Snæfellsnes

Mt. Kirkjufell (463 m) is the most prominent mountain in Grundarfjörður and a landmark of the fishing town.  The mountain is free-standing and referred to as the most beautiful mountain on the Snæfellsnes peninsula - some even say the whole of Iceland. At least it is the most photographed mountain. Unfortunately, it has also become the most dangerous mountain in Iceland and several foreign travellers have fallen to their death while trying to climb this beautiful mountain. Please, don't attempt to climb it and only admire it from afar. Top photo: Mt. Kirkjufell Mt. Kirkjufell and Kirk

Ólafsvík Town and the Bridal Veil Bæjarfoss Falls on Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Ólafsvík is a lovely little fishing town on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula with a population of some 1,100 people.   As in every town and village in Iceland, you will find a museum here in Ólafsvík, a folk museum located in an old, preserved storehouse, dating back to 1844.  Top photo: Ólafsvík town as seen from the view-dial Ólafsvíkurkirkja church Joined together the neighbouring villages Hellissandur, Rif, and the town Ólafsvík are called Snæfellsbær municipality.  Ólafsvík or the Cove of Ólafur is named after the settler of this area, Ólafur belgur.
