Rauðinúpur Cape and the 2 Sea Stacks on Melrakkaslétta in North-East Iceland

On my travels on the Melrakkaslétta plain peninsula in North-East Iceland, I drove around the peninsula and visited as many of the beautiful sights there as I could. This area is very rich in birdlife and the tranquillity so far north is almost unsurpassed. I was heading for Rauðinúpur or Red Cape, which protrudes 73 meters out of the North-West end of Melrakkaslétta plain. I had already visited one of the northernmost places on the mainland of Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi on the same day and was longing for more of the same. Rauðinúpur is located at 65°28'23.29" north. Hraunhafnartangi and Þorgeirsdys - one of the Northernmost Spots on the Mainland of Iceland

On our second day on the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland, we headed for Hraunhafnartangi spit, which lies at 66° 32′ 9.6″ N, 16° 1′ 31.08″ W, making it one of the northernmost points on the mainland of Iceland, together with Rifstangi, which is also close by here on Melrakkaslétta.   In July 2016 it was confirmed by Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland that Rifstangi is located 68 metres further north than Hraunhafnartangi.  Top photo: on the way to Hraunhafnartangi It is so peaceful and serene in this part of Iceland Only the island of Grímsey is l

Raufarhöfn - the Arctic Circle Village in NE-Iceland - and the Mystical Arctic Henge

In this travel-blog I want to tell you about a beautiful area of Iceland that is often overlooked by visitors, the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland. You will find Melrakkaslétta north of a very popular area in the North, with all the beautiful stops on the Diamond Circle. The Diamond Circle is my favourite jewel circle in Iceland, but it is well worth driving further up north and checking out the less-visited areas of Iceland, where you can experience the stillness of nature. A Visit to the historic Þingeyrakirkja Church in North Iceland

One of Iceland's treasures, Þingeyrakirkja church in North Iceland, is amongst the most noteworthy churches in Iceland. It is located at the historic Þingeyrar, the site of a Benedictine monastery from the period 1133-1551. Þingeyraklaustur monastery was the first permanent monastery in Iceland, and the longest-running one. Let's take a tour of this beautiful church and explore the history of Þingeyrar. Þingeyrakirkja church and the lychgate I have shown you some of the cultural centres of Iceland in medieval times in other travel-blogs, like Skálholt Episcopal See, Hólar Episcopal See,

The Historic Glaumbær Turf House in North Iceland

As you might have noticed from my previous travel-blogs, then I adore turf houses. Whenever I travel around Iceland I seek out turf houses and turf churches, they are just so characteristic of my country. Everybody lived in a turf house in Iceland, both rich and poor and there are still several turf houses in Iceland, most of which have been preserved. There is a lovely historic turf house in Skagafjörður in North Iceland, called Glaumbær farm, which should not be missed while travelling in this area. The extraordinary Kolufossar waterfalls in Kolugljúfur Canyon in North-Iceland

In this travel-blog I want to show you a beautiful canyon and waterfalls in Kolugljúfur canyon in North Iceland. The first time I visited Kolugljúfur and Kolufossar was many years ago. I had watched a travel program on TV about Kolugljúfur canyon in Víðidalur valley and really wanted to see it with my own eyes. So off we went up north :) Top photo: By Kolufossar waterfalls in the middle of a bright summer night The summer cottage at Dæli We were travelling in the evening and needed a place to stay for the night. Dæli Guesthouse had been recommended to me, so I phoned ahead and I was in

Drangey Bird Cliff in North Iceland and the Viking Grettir the Strong

I went on a truly memorable trip when I sailed by boat from Drangeyjarferðir tours, and climbed up to the top of the steep Drangey Island sea cliff in Skagafjörður fjord in North Iceland. There is only one accessible path to the top of Drangey Island - on the man-made path at Uppgönguvík or the Climbing-Up-Cove. It is a steep path up to the top of the 180 m high cliff, but there are ropes and chains to make the ascent easier. And a ladder on the final climb.  Top photo: Puffins on Drangey Island - all my photos are taken in fog, so they are a bit gloomy On the boat tour arriving at Drange

A fantastic Hike into the mysterious Stakkholtsgjá Canyon in South-Iceland

I recently went on a fantastic tour with my mother, where I explored a beautiful canyon in Iceland - Stakkholtsgjá canyon.  We were a group of Icelandic people travelling together and were headed to Þórsmörk National Park on a day trip. One of the stops on the way was to hike into this beautiful canyon. Top photo: In Stakkholtsgjá canyon Hiking in Stakkholtsgjá canyon Stakkholtsgjá is one of the places in Iceland which seem otherwordly. The canyon is around 2 km long and up to 100 m deep.  There are some small rivers to be crossed and many of us got wet feet and some people fell in an

Keldur Turf House in South Iceland - is this the oldest House in Iceland?

I adore turf houses, also called sod houses, they are so typical Icelandic. I have written a long travel-blog listing all the turf houses in Iceland. But, I think that it is proper to write a special travel-blog about the oldest turf house in Iceland, the historical farm of Keldur in South Iceland. Keldur is one of only very few preserved turf houses in South Iceland, the other ones are the turf house at Austur-Meðalholt, which is now a museum, and at Skógar Museum you will find a lovely collection of turf houses.
